Any updates on short code support? Qik apparently uses a short code for their new service, so it can't currently be used with a TextFree number.

Please add short code. For those in the military stationed overseas, textfree allows us to have a US number, and short code would be soooo helpful.

**Please make this additional urgent feature a priority. It's extremely necessary for various most commonly used social websites/emails to have a text phone number to send short code texts to in order to confirm identities on user accounts. Sometimes/Often, they will not give the option of email or telephone confirmation & a user account is left disabled (i.e. Facebook). This is a huge inconvenience/issue. Please listen to your users & you'll definitely get a higher rating on the updated app. If it's not too hard & it's realistic, please make your Textfree phone #'s receive short codes. Thanks 4 your consideration.**

Ook?! While it would maybe be nice to have , I just don't see how neccessary it is to have on this app ( at least for me anyways). I DON'T mean to start up an argument , BUT i just find some of the comments
silly. Ok, I get now that Facebook RELIES on these codes heavily . While I'm sure that may be true, I bet you could JUST as easily get email updates too. OR even use iMessage to receive them also. I mean are you REALY going to stop using the app , because of no short code support?!

it has been very frustrating/inconvenient that your app can't text to short codes in addition to mobile text numbers. It's a big deal that Facebook uses short codes to send them texts. They require a mobile number that can receive texts to send a code to to verify accounts for reactivation after being locked out. I can't receive their verification code text to reactivate my account. And my mobile doesn't have text. It is absolutely necessary/important/long overdue that you update your app to send/receive texts from major widely used email providers/social networks, other major web services who use short codes for important interaction with their users, often to change log in info or verify an account that's been disabled. This affects a large number of users & there's currently no other option for those who don't have text with their mobile provider. Please add this feature ASAP. It is a must if you want more people to download/be happy with using your app. Many important texts cannot be performed, often resulting in loss of access to important services used on a daily basis. And it should be included as a free update to your existing features.

Not all short codes cost additional money. If you do not want to support premium-rate short codes, please just allow Facebook shortcode texts to come through or allow texts from these numbers but dont allow to send. I don't have texting on my phone, but I have textfree. It saves me money on text messages. I'd like to receive texts from facebook but dont care about sending.
Thanks.

XMPP will destroy SMS (that's texting) as people like yourself are introduced to it
.
.
Especially as SMS can be added as a gateway to an XMPP server!
.
.
XMPP is faster
.
XMPP is actually-free : zero ads
.
XMPP does NOT require software, no app to install
.
XMPP can be used without client via the interweb, or with ANY client you choose (again ZERO ads)
.
any XMPP domain can communicate with any other XMPP domain
.
XMPP can convey text messages, chat (MUC), video chat, voice chat (SIP phone calls)
.
XMPP initiated SIP phone calls can allow communication with ashbackward skypetards, or anyone else using SIP, VoIP, pstn
..
talk to facetards via xmpp, too, without having a facetted account, or simply use email

public XMPP servers are easy to find. Get your JID (Jabber ID, aka XMPP account) now and ditch SMS (texting)

this is curt wilson from facebook and first thanks for responding to my short code ?. the companies that purchase the short codes pay over $10k upfront and not sure how much every year after but after the purchase this short code is given to all cell phone providers for free and each provider sets it up in their network. i would think and hope that you guys could get on this list because short codes are getting very popular and will continue to grow substantially over the next few years. if you are unable to receive these short codes for free it would be quite costly because there are probably thousands already and thousands more coming. i would definitely pay to receive these short codes and would be unable to use your wonderful service if you dont get access to these codes. thanks!

Sorry, I got cut off earlier...
...about it. The only sites I've run into for free has to be Facebook and YouTube for which I have never paid a single dime to. And don't you guys get paid for ads already from the vendors where you don't really have to charge for an ad-free app? I'm just saying the name should have been changed a long time ago, you know?

I have to respond to PingerMar's Sept-20 2011 12:55 pm comment. But first, thank you for responding! BTW I am not a user of short codes, I may have used it about 10 times since texting but for some reason this subject drew my attention...Ok, I just discovered Trxtfree today and signed up for it thinking it was actually free but I ended up buying more minutes to add to my free 10 minutes. Now let's be honest here, how many Textfree users here have actually paid nothing at all to text or call using Textfree?BTW, this includes paying another affiliate company for their services through Textfree. I am very new here and maybe I can make calls and text for free here, but realistically and reasonably how many Textfreers have been able to take advantage? Therefore, it upset me a bit when PingerMars said their app name would have to be changed and I am guessing the word "free" would be omitted because to me, free means absolutely free and there are no if's, and's, or buts
September 20, 2011 04:27 pm
Patricio Ny
I agree with @Tas A
We want short codes just to use it with some of the basic apps, now people say they will be willing to pay, then why don't you get for example AT&T unlimited texting that is $20 a month?, I don't see why pinger have to work on it if you want to pay for something that is already out there.
Now, aren't we all here because at first we wanted to txt for free?
and Pinger you guys made money for the adds on the app right? adding short code txt to the app would get more people to install the app on their phones and as we all know we don't care about the iAdds :)
September 20, 2011 03:34 pm
Tas A
@PingerMars Well, basically what most of us are saying is that we should be able to use short codes for things that are free. For example, twitter and facebook but when it comes to things such as voting on american idol or something else, we could be given the option to either pay or not use short codes for that reason. Most of us want short codes so we could get notified when someone tweets or get notifications on facebook. I would say a majority of us want only these two sites to be used for short codes.

Hi everyone,
Often, texting to short codes costs you a premium (more than a normal text). If we were to incorporate the ability to text to short codes into the app, we would probably have to charge you for it.
Is this something you'd be willing to pay for? Would you be ok with a name change to our app? (Well, it couldn't be "Textfree" if it isn't free anymore, could it?)
Feel free to respond! :)
September 20, 2011 12:55 pm
Cierena C.
Do you guys at Pinger have a valid reason or reasons for not adding short code? Such as: it would make Pinger liable for something somehow in some way, dishonest people like crooks can take advantage in some way for malicious gain through fraudulent acts by using short codes, or it would be too expensive and the text/calls would no longer be "free" or inexpensive anyways because the whole program would have to be completely recoded/remade because there is no way to change things because of how the app was designed in the first place. These are just a few ideas...some times I think communication is everything and Pinger should communicate why they won't or can't support short codes or if they can sometime in the near future or later...at least let your loyal patrons know about it. I'm just commenting here so please don't get mad...for me, if I were in charge I'd say go for it and do it especially if it increases your income on your financial statement; and it sounds like short coding is very popular and would be used quite a bit so I don't think it would hurt you guys at Pinger financially in the
long run...Unless, of course there is a valid reason or reasons you won't add short codes...I personally would love to know. Thanks for reading my comment, something I usually don't do but felt compelled to do today.
