The bar at the top of your Main Screen contains your Recents.
Any time you get a notification (missed call, new text, etc.) it will pop up in the top right of your Recents.

If you haven't already started a conversation with the person who has contacted you, or if you haven't added that person as a contact, you will find your conversation there.

If your notifications are from multiple contacts, or if you don't have any new notifications, it will open up your recents screen:

Keep scrolling down in your recents to view old communications.
