To create your own background image, tap the "Backgrounds" icon on the top right corner of the app.

When the "Backgrounds" screen comes up, tap the "More" button and a "Get more backgrounds from" popup will come up:

Choose "My Pictures" and you'll be prompted to either "Use a photo" in your Pictures, or "Take a picture" (if you have a camera).
